Memory Loss or Amnesia
What is amnesia(Memory Loss)?
Amnesia is the condition of a person's memory loss, it may
be the information and circumstances that make up a person, as well as the
identities of the people around them. Although shows often show that no one
even remembers one's own information, even their own name, in reality, amnesia
does not affect one's identity. The memory loss may be permanent or temporary.
People with amnesia, due to memory problems, often find it
difficult to learn new information, and to add new memories. In other words,
most new life events will not remain in the mind and will be forgotten.
What is the cause of amnesia?
Any accident, discomfort or illness that affects the head
and damages the part of the brain responsible for processing the memory can
cause memory loss or amnesia. Amnesia that causes brain damage is called
neurological amnesia. Here are some of the possible causes of neurological
amnesia:
- Inflammation of the brain or encephalitis, possibly due to infection
- Stroke
- Lack of oxygen in the brain
- Alcohol abuse
- The presence of a tumor in the brain
- Alzheimer's Disease
- Taking the drug benzodiazepines
- A head injury that causes blood clotting in the brain
Aside from the aforementioned, there can also be amnesia
from severe emotional trauma such as witnessing a serious crime or being a
victim themselves. This is called dissociative amnesia .
People with amnesia may have trouble remembering the past,
or may have trouble keeping new information in mind. Most common is the
frequency of forgetting past life events. Youth events may still be remembered
but not events of the past year. There is also a lot of confusion about things
or disorientation.
Who can have amnesia?
Everyone can have amnesia but the likelihood of having it is
highest among those who undergo head surgery, who have suffered a stroke, as
well as those who are addicted to alcohol.
How to find out amnesia?
The presence of amnesia is determined by the doctor's
evaluation of memory function. Can conduct interviews about memories. This can
determine the cause of memory loss, the extent to which the memory is affected,
and so on. It can also study the reflexes or ability of the brain to respond to
things. In addition, the brain can also undergo MRI and CT Scans to determine
if there is a problem.
What is the cure for amnesia?
To date there is no remedy for memory loss. The only cure
that can be made in the presence of amnesia is therapies that help strengthen
the rest of the memory and boost the absorption of new information. An
occupational therapist can assist a patient with amnesia. Recording events can
also help keep the brain from remembering events.
