Nutritional Supplements: Advantages and Disadvantages

Nutritional-Supplements

Nutritional Supplements: Advantages and Disadvantages

In ancient times, people used a variety of herbs to treat diseases and viruses, reduce fever and heal scars. Natural remedies are able to reduce pain, improve metabolism or help calm down and get rid of.

By studying various plants, the scientists came to the conclusion that the effectiveness of these plants in some cases is not inferior to the effects of drugs, and at the same time allow not to worry about possible side effects. Therefore, in pharmacology, products such as food supplements - concentrates of biologically active substances were created as a supplement to the daily diet to prevent the lack of substances necessary for the body.

Advantages

Biologically active additives or food supplements are not medicines, therefore the principle of their use is different.

Nutritional supplements are more often used to strengthen immunity or as an additional source of vitamins, because in today's busy pace of life, people are often unable to absorb the necessary substances in the body with food.

Natural supplements can be an effective aid in the treatment of various chronic diseases, but only in combination with medications and instructions prescribed by a doctor. Additional properties of biologically active additives:

  • Assists in the metabolic regulation process;
  • Promotes the formation of blood cells and proper blood clotting;
  • Acts as an antioxidant;
  • Some food supplements have hormone-like effects.
  • Promotes the development of enzymes in the body;
  • Has a beneficial effect on cellular respiratory processes;
  • Helps to remove toxins from the body;
  • Promotes the functioning of the body's reproductive system;
  • Promotes the normal formation of connective tissue;
  • Strengthens the cardiovascular system;
  • Helps to improve immunity;
  • Helps maintain a normal electrolyte (sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium and chlorine) balance in the body, which is necessary for heart, muscle and nerve health;
  • Improves the balance of acids and alkalis (ph) in the body;
  •       Has a beneficial effect on the intestinal microflora.

Flaws (Disadvantages)

The effects of food supplements on the body are still actively discussed. The negative features are:

• habit of long-term use. Over time, the body becomes accustomed to receiving the necessary biologically active substances in high concentrations, and discontinuation of the dietary supplement may lead to deterioration of well-being and other undesirable symptoms, as well as deterioration of the body's natural defenses and synthesis of substances;

• Incorrect combination of vitamins and minerals. The interactions of vitamins and minerals in food supplements have not been fully studied, for example, a substance in one product can neutralize the effects of another or, conversely, increase it, leading to various allergic reactions and disorders;

• Some food supplements can cause side effects (which are not always mentioned in the package leaflet), so in case of serious illness, it is essential to consult a doctor before taking food supplements.

When buying supplements, it is important to pay attention to the manufacturer. It is not recommended to buy these products from unreliable sources, such as online stores or based on advertisements on various foreign sites that promise "miracles" using these biologically active additives. There is a risk not only to buy a low-quality product that will not have any effect, but also to suffer serious health problems. Nutritional supplements should be purchased only in pharmacies and if recommended by your doctor.

Why is spring the wrong time for diets? Explains pharmacist

Spring-is-the-wrong-time-for-diets

Why is spring the wrong time for diets? Explains Pharmacist

As summer approaches, when the weather begins to get warmer and brighter, more and more people are interested in different diets for weight loss. It is important to remember that drastic diets based on fasting, a very high calorie reduction, the exclusion of certain nutrients from the diet or the consumption of uniform products are not only undesirable but also dangerous to health. Līga Cīrule, a pharmacist of the pharmacy, tells more about why spring is not a suitable time for diets and the conditions that must be observed before starting a diet.

Majority of the peoples are obese, due to the out exclusive diets, but it is important to remember that not only diet, but also physical activity is important to keep fit. diet, make sure that the body will receive all the necessary nutrients (fats, carbohydrates, proteins and fiber), as well as vitamins, minerals and energy (kilocalories), because only this body will be able to function, "says the pharmacist.

After the winter the body is weakened

Autumn and winter are a stressful time for our body, because much less sunlight is absorbed, which helps to synthesize vitamin D. Vitamin D, in turn, is responsible for many important body functions, such as providing immunity and building the happiness hormone serotonin. Also, in autumn and winter, people suffer more from respiratory viruses that weaken the body, as well as during this period, vegetables, fruits and berries grown in our latitudes, rich in various vitamins and minerals, are less available. That is why spring is a time to think about a complete and varied diet to help the body regain strength. In spring, it is desirable to include sprouts (radishes, sunflowers, cress, cabbage, etc.), new greens (dill, onions, parsley), spinach, sorrel, lettuce, dandelion leaves, first radishes and carrots. It is also the right time to free the freezer from the previous year's stocks, such as frozen berries.

Proper meal planning

The first of the diet rules is proper meal planning - breakfast, lunch, dinner, as well as healthy snacks between meals, such as a fruit, vegetable, nuts or berries. Main meals should include carbohydrate products such as oatmeal, buckwheat, rye bread, vegetables, pasta (preferably whole grains), protein products - eggs, kefir, cottage cheese, milk, fish -, fish products, lean meat, quinoa, soybeans such as spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, beets, greens, arugula, lettuce, cabbage and courgettes. Sufficient fat will be ingested already with these products and during the preparation process, so it is important not to overdo it and, for example, do not use fat when reheating food. It is important to diversify meals and keep the portion size that does not cause overeating.

Sufficient fluid intake

The second basic rule is to absorb a sufficient amount of unsweetened liquid, such as water. Depending on lifestyle, diet and other factors, you should take one and a half to three liters a day. One of the indicators that helps to keep track of whether the fluid is absorbed enough is the color and smell of the urine - if the urine is dark and has an unpleasant odor, the water intake is too little on a daily basis. Dry lips and skin can also indicate insufficient fluid intake. It is important for people with chronic kidney disease to consult a doctor about the amount of fluid they need.

Individual diet plan and physical activities

For people who want to lose weight, it is definitely advisable to consult certified professionals before for an individually tailored diet plan. Specialists will also be able to advise on which physical activities should be chosen, or will recommend a specialist who will draw up a plan for physical activities. One of the easiest physical activities that most people can choose from is walking - 10,000 steps every day, which equates to about six to seven kilometers. People who do not travel this distance on a daily basis have to conclude that their lifestyle is sedentary.

"Diets should be treated very sensibly, as poor nutrition can negatively affect bowel movements, immunity, well-being and joy of life. Prolonged malnutrition can even be linked to serious illnesses such as malignancies, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and osteoporosis," warns.

Propolis: In what cases and how to use it properly? Explained by specialists

Propolis-Natural-immune-boosting-agents

Propolis: Natural immune-boosting agents

Pharmacists 'observations show that in April, customers' interest in natural means of strengthening immunity, especially propolis and products containing it, increased significantly. Therefore, useful information has been gathered on what propolis is and when and how to use it properly.

As the family doctor explains, the increase in interest and demand for propolis could be explained by the fact that people are now looking for ways to strengthen their immunity, and propolis is one of the so-called natural immune-boosting agents. It has also been suggested in popular scientific articles that propolis is an antioxidant with antiviral activity. There are several scientific reports on the antiviral effects of propolis in medical databases, but clinical studies are needed to judge its effectiveness.

What is propolis and when is it used?

Propolis is a natural plant product that bees produce from the pollen and resin in plants by treating it with glandular secretions. It contains flavonoids, vitamins, carbohydrates, minerals, trace elements and other ingredients, says the family doctor.

The use of propolis is wide. The pharmacist explains that it is used to make products for both external and oral use. They are used in cases of skin diseases, for the treatment of the nasal mucosa both in case of runny nose and prophylactically, also in case of inflammation of the mouth and throat. They are also used in cases of gastrointestinal diseases, proctology, gynecology, as well as to strengthen immunity. However, in case of any of these diseases, it is important to choose a suitable remedy in consultation with a specialist.

Products containing propolis

Propolis is used to make various products. The best known and most common of these are propolis alcohol solution and propolis oil solution. Sunflower, olive or sea buckthorn oil is used to make the oil solution. Propolis-containing syrups, capsules, lozenges, nasal drops, ointments, suppositories, sprays and other products are also available, the pharmacist says.

On the other hand, the family doctor emphasizes that when purchasing products containing propolis, it is necessary to carefully read their instructions for use and use the product carefully, in accordance with the instructions.

Caution when using propolis

Your doctor will advise you to be very careful with propolis, as it may cause an allergic reaction in some people, which can be severe. Therefore, it should always be remembered that propolis creams and ointments intended for topical use may cause allergic contact dermatitis on the skin. Therefore, the use of any new product should be critically evaluated and initiated with caution and gradually in consultation with a specialist.

Strengthening immunity

The pharmacist has observed that over the past month, the interest of customers in other natural remedies that have antiviral activity has also increased. For example, for nasal mucosal care products that contain herbal extracts.

 The family doctor emphasizes that the most important things for strengthening immunity are a healthy, balanced diet, adequate fluid intake, regular, quality sleep, taking care of your psycho-emotional health, walking in the fresh air, daily physical activity for at least 30 minutes daily and taking vitamin D in appropriate doses.

Be healthy and take care of yourself!

How to find products rich in vitamins with a long shelf life

How-to-find-products-rich-in-vitamins-with-a-long-shelf-life

How to find products rich in vitamins with a long shelf life?

Spring has always been a test for the body - after the winter vitamin reserves are depleted, so to recover, it is important to follow the basic principles of healthy eating. Currently, being in self-isolation, on the one hand, it is possible to have more control over the quality of food and fat, because meals are prepared at home, on the other hand, buying products for a longer period of time can be a challenge to find long-lasting, but at the same time the product is rich in vitamins and friendly to health.

"In order to boost immunity and fight spring viruses, it is essential to take vitamins A, C and D, but of the minerals, the body currently needs zinc, selenium and iron," the pharmacist emphasizes.

She also explains that we can get most of the vitamins and minerals we need from the body by properly designing our menu - including foods from all major nutrient groups - cereals, fruits and vegetables, dairy products, meat and fish. Currently, we visit stores less often, but it would not be right to base the menu on canned food, frozen semi-finished products or various snacks. It is best to choose local products, especially vegetables. It is also worth looking in their basements and freezers, because last year 's local vegetables have still retained their nutritional value well enough to be included in the menu, "says the pharmacist.

5 vegetables to absorb the necessary minerals in the spring

1 Cabbage is a source of minerals and amino acids. They contain B vitamins, vitamin C, PP and K vitamins, folic acid, carotene, biotin, calcium, iron, potassium and magnesium. Cabbage is low in calories and high in fiber, which helps improve the functioning of the digestive system. Cabbage also contains substances that help reduce the risk of heart disease, help control blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Cabbage can be eaten fresh in salads, added to soups and stews.

 2 Beets are great for strengthening the body, as they contain B vitamins, C, P, PP vitamins, folic acid, potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, manganese, iodine, zinc, iron, fiber, pectin and other biologically active substances. Beetroot has a beneficial effect on the intestinal microflora due to the presence of malic acid, citric acid, tartaric acid and lactic acid. Therefore, it is recommended to use them to cleanse the body and promote bowel movements. They are also recommended in case of iron deficiency. To preserve nutrients and beets taste better, they do not need to be peeled before cooking.

3 Carrots help fight viruses and reduce the risk of cancer. They are rich in fiber, vitamins B, C, E, K, beta carotene and minerals such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, iodine, folic acid and others. Beta carotene, which is converted into vitamin A in the body, provides good eyesight, healthy skin and mucous membranes. Carrots are unique with a variety of cooking options - they can be added to soups, baked in the oven with other vegetables, stewed and steamed, salads or even cakes. Carrots are also a great and healthy snack.

 4 Pumpkins contain 90% water and very little fat, so they are used in various diets. Pumpkin also contains copper, iron, magnesium and potassium, as well as vitamins of groups C, E, PP and B, while pumpkin seeds are rich in selenium. Yellow color is determined by carotenes, which are needed to strengthen the immune system. As pumpkin is high in fiber, it also improves digestion and is also good for cleansing the body. Recommended for people with atherosclerosis and high blood pressure. Pumpkins, like carrots, can be used in both salty and sweet dishes.

5 Potatoes are often excluded from the menu because of the starch they contain, which can be detrimental to diabetics, but others should not avoid including potatoes in moderation. Potatoes are a good source of vitamins B6, B3 and C, fiber, potassium, copper, phosphorus and other minerals. In addition, potatoes actually have fewer calories than pasta, rice or buckwheat, the only thing that matters is how they are cooked. During the season, it is best to steam the potatoes with the whole skin, but in the spring they must be peeled before cooking, because the potato skin produces solanine, which can adversely affect the health of the intestinal tract.

Omega eggs - a convenient way to absorb omega 3 fatty acids

convenient-way-to-absorb-omega-3-fatty-acids

Omega eggs - a convenient way to absorb omega 3 fatty acids

It is customary to eat valuable omega 3 fatty acids with fatty fish or fish oil capsules - many recall childhood with a large bottle of fish oil in the refrigerator. At present, the use of omega eggs can also provide the required daily dose. It can be said that they are two bunnies with one shot - the breakfast omelette is not only delicious, but also contains more valuable nutrients.

The need for omega 3 in the body

There is no need to be afraid of the word "fat", because there are good and bad fats. Omega 3 fatty acids are good fats that reduce the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. The body is unable to produce omega 3 fatty acids on its own, so they must be taken with food. Most of it is in salmon, cod liver, herring and anchovies. However, fish products are not the only way to eat these fatty acids. They are also found in pig and chicken liver, eggs, walnuts, cabbage, spinach, linseed and rapeseed oil. They improve brain function, lower blood pressure, promote cardiovascular health, and prevent the development of arthritis. The list of positive benefits should be that they lower the level of bad cholesterol, as well as prevent it from accumulating on the walls of blood vessels, thus reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Omega 3 intake in particular should be considered during pregnancy, as these fatty acids ensure the successful development of the baby's brain and have a positive effect on intellectual abilities. Omega 3 also stimulates the baby's nervous system and retina. Even in the first months of life, mother's milk is the source of these fatty acids.

What exactly are omega eggs?

Chicken eggs contain vitamins and minerals that improve vision and stimulate brain function. One egg provides 30 percent of the daily dose of vitamin K needed for normal blood clotting. But protein is the most important part of the body, ensuring that cells and tissues regenerate. One egg contains six grams of protein, which will provide 10 percent of the daily dose. And it is the unsaturated fatty acids that make up most of the fat in an egg.

Egg producers are aware of the value of omega 3, so chicken feed includes flaxseed, fish oil or algae, which are products rich in fatty acids. Thus, chickens begin to lay eggs that contain more omega 3. Such eggs are especially valuable for those who do not eat meat and fish. It is also possible to buy omega 3 rich eggs in Latvia. Eggs are laid by domestic hens, which eat food supplemented with rapeseed oil or rapeseed cake.

An adult needs to eat 200 to 500 milligrams of omega 3 fatty acids a day, but on average one omega egg contains 100 to 200 milligrams of omega 3. There is no need to get bogged down in a drastic egg diet, because one of the cornerstones of a healthy diet is variety. Therefore, when eating fish products, it is worth remembering that omega 3 is also found in oils, eggs and vegetables.

Why include berries in the diet? Explains nutritionist

Why-include-berries-in-the-diet

Why include berries in the diet? Explains nutritionist

Summer is a time when we can enjoy a great variety of berries, including strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and other delicious benefits. Why should you include berries in your diet and can you eat too many berries? The answers to these questions are provided by an expert in healthy eating, a certified nutrition specialist of the Rimi Better Life movement.

Natural vitamin charge

Berries such as strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, cherries, gooseberries, blackcurrants, currants and other berries are widely available. Berries are rich in vitamins, organic acids, minerals and antioxidants, so daily use of these products improves health.

Antioxidants in the berries, such as anthocyanin, protect the body from various diseases and improve immunity, also having a positive effect on the cardiovascular system and even helping to protect against oncological diseases. The berries are also rich in vitamins A, B and C. Sea buckthorn, blackcurrants, wild roses are especially rich in vitamin C. In addition, wild roses also contain iron, as do gooseberries, raspberries and strawberries. Berries also contain other valuable minerals such as calcium, copper, potassium, phosphorus and others.

The berries have a relatively low energy value - they contain an average of 40 kilocalories per 100 grams. This means that eating a small bowl of berries, we will consume only 100 kilocalories. That is why the berries can serve as a delicious and figure-friendly snack between meals.

Observe moderation!

However, when eating berries, you need to know the mayor. The recommended daily dose for an adult is 500-600 grams of fresh vegetables, fruits and berries. About 60% of 500 grams should be vegetables, the rest - fruits and berries. So it is recommended to eat no more than 200-250 grams of fruit or berries a day.

Despite being low in calories, eating excessive amounts of berries over a long period of time can still contribute to weight gain. People who follow their weight should also be wary of watermelon, which is so popular in the summer season, because it contains a lot of sugar. Those who have problems with blood sugar levels should also be careful with this giant berry. Also, too many berries in the diet can negatively affect the digestive system and cause allergic reactions - skin rash, itching and other unpleasant symptoms. Particular care should be taken with wild roses, as they are rich in vitamin C and organic acids, so it is recommended to include in the diet only a few wild rose fruits a day.

To enrich the summer menu, the nutritionist recommends adding berries to your favorite porridge, yogurt, desserts and salads. For example, berries will taste good in dishes with spinach or mint, while smoothies and sorbets from blueberries, strawberries or other berries will help to cool down on these hot days. The berries are also perfectly compatible with milk or vegetable milk and will be a great addition to enrich the taste of water.

Apples are considered a "nutritional powerhouse" and contain many valuable nutrients. The fiber in apples can neutralize various diseases and limit the amount of bad cholesterol in our blood, while the B vitamin complex is responsible for the health of red blood cells and the nervous system. Apples also contain quite a lot of vitamin C, which is an effective natural antioxidant and blocks some of the damage caused by free radicals. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, vitamin C also increases the body's resistance to infectious diseases.

Quarantine is not a solution to the problem, immunity must be strengthened

Weakened immunity is a major cause of many diseases. The body is weakened after the winter, because during it it has experienced a deficiency of several substances. Spring is a time when you definitely need to take care of your health, strengthen your body's defenses. In addition, the particularly dangerous coronavirus is spreading this spring.

"If we are talking in the context of a coronavirus, then there are a number of ways to strengthen the immune system," explains Lauris Līcītis, a certified clinical immunologist. It is better to get preventive measure before it hits you make you sick .

According to the specialist, there are very simple things that we forget about, but which are very effective and help to avoid the severe course of an infectious disease. "First of all, it's inhalation. It can also be done by the grandmother's method, you don't have to have an inhaler. You have to take a pot of hot water, add a little essential oil like juniper oil, turpentine, Australian tea tree oil or something like that. "The essential oil should be of good quality. And take a preventative inhalation when you return from a store or other crowded place," recommends the immunologist.

Also, before going inside the store, it is advisable to inhale some essential oil and inhale fresh air for half a minute with a full breast to ventilate the lungs.

Nor should we forget about natural preparations or, as they are popularly called, food additives. There are a number of drugs that have been scientifically proven to modulate the immune system and effectively stimulate the body's antiviral immunity. All you have to do is look for information about these preparations and use them.

It is very important to prevent vitamin deficiency. There are different ways to do this. Synthetic vitamins can be used, but natural ones work best. To improve the effect of synthetic vitamins, it is better to drink juice rather than water or eat some fruit. Then the effect will be better.

It is also necessary to use oils that contain, for example, garlic extract. Products rich in phytoncides should be used. It is also very healthy to eat a couple of garlic cloves.
The rooms must be ventilated regularly! If this is possible, air filters with ionizing effect should be used. Aromatherapy lamps are also a good thing.

It all starts on a plate

If you feel that your body needs strengthening, diversify your menu, with special emphasis on fruits and vegetables and giving up harmful foods. There are people who start a diet in the spring to look better. But spring is not the best time to start slimming. You had to start taking care of your figure in winter. Exactly balanced, wholesome food will fill all the losses suffered by the body in winter.

The spring menu, which focuses on strengthening immunity, should include quality sour milk products that contain bifidobacteria and lactobacteria that ensure normal bowel function. It is known that human immunity begins directly in the digestive tract, so put it in order and then get rid of many diseases.

The body needs to be supplied with antioxidants, which are vitamins A, E and C. These substances neutralize the effects of free radicals and thus increase the protective capacity. To replenish antioxidant reserves, eat more products such as carrots, citrus fruits, liver, vegetable oil.

Substances such as flavonoids have pronounced antioxidant properties. Not only do they fight free radicals, but they also work against cancer. Flavonoids contain walnuts, beans, tomatoes.

Immunologists recommend supplementing the menu with minerals. They are in vegetables and fruits - lettuce, broccoli, asparagus, apples, cucumbers. We must not forget about microelements, without which the whole body cannot function. Selenium and zinc are especially important for immunity, as they promote the synthesis of substances in the immune system. Sources of selenium and zinc in food are meat, nuts, eggs, seafood, cheese, cereals, liver, kidneys.

It should also be remembered that changes in eating habits alone are not enough to strengthen the immune system. Requires a lot of physical activity. Movement is life. Even if you don't have time for the gym and the morning run, do morning exercises, take walks with your family, walk more on foot and ride a bike instead of public transport. Go active play with children, accustom them to movements - it will help them to be healthy and strong in the future.

Full, healthy sleep

Strengthening the immune system is especially important," emphasizes Toms Kaulakalns, a representative of the pharmaceutical company "Valentis" in Latvia.Healthy immunity system resist such pandemic. During quarantine, you need not only to eat and walk in the fresh air, but also to forget that the body needs immune-boosting substances and good sleep - at least seven or eight hours a day. In addition, full sleep protects against bad mood and improves mental work capacity, "recalls the expert.

Let's use immunomodulators

If you suffer from seasonal changes that cause health problems, add natural immune modulators to your food - substances that boost and restore immunity.

All immunomodulators have a tonic effect on the body. The use of such drugs activates metabolism, endocrine and vegetative regulation. Substances are best absorbed in liquid form, for example when using "immunised". All immunomodulatory drugs have a general tonic effect on our body. Intake of such drugs activates metabolism, endocrine system and vegetative regulation. Liquids are best absorbed. For example, "immunized", peculiar "cocktails", which contain the most important substances for strengthening immunity from shiitake mushrooms, colostrum and royal jelly. They are easy to use - open and drink only once a day.

Immunomodulators increase the body's resistance to infections, so it is recommended to use them not only in spring, but also in winter during colds. In addition, the body's resistance to harmful environmental factors increases.

In today's fast pace of life, well-being often worsens. Rural people are more likely to eat fresh fruit, vegetables and dairy products, while urban dwellers often eat something quickly. Therefore, the best complex vitamins should be used. Without a full supply of beneficial substances, the state of health will not improve significantly.

A new look at beneficial substances

We are used to using traditional groups of vitamins. And they have proven their effectiveness. However, science does not stand still, so we can name familiar substances that are rediscovering this season for us, showing their ability to strengthen the human immune system.

Shiitake mushrooms.

The chemical composition of these mushrooms is complex and they contain many valuable, beneficial compounds: proteins, amino acids (including arginine, histidine, leucine, isoleucine, tyrosine, threonine, methianine, phenylalanine and valine), carbohydrates (including mushroom polysaccharides ), fats (containing mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids), fungal phytoncides, dietary fiber, vitamins (C, B1, B2, B3, B6, B9, PP, E and D), potassium mineral salts, calcium, magnesium, sodium, manganese, phosphorus . The healing properties of shiitake mushrooms are also determined by the high content of iron, copper, zinc, selenium and other elements.

Colostrum contains vitamins and minerals that ensure the health of the immune system. Vitamin A in colostrum is 10 times more than in blood plasma. This is vital for the immune system, especially the thymus gland, which controls the functions of the immune system by synthesizing lymphocytes and developing antibodies.

The value of Peruvian milk is unquestionable. It contains more than 400 active ingredients, including vitamins, essential amino acids, proteins, enzymes, hormones and other ingredients. The value of organic royal jelly is that it boosts the immune system so much that it is able to cope with disease on its own. Clinical experiments show that royal jelly can be used to treat 70 different diseases.

Food additives containing these elements or combinations thereof can be purchased in Latvian pharmacies.
